William Watson (Bill)

After serving in the RAF I joined the Church Army in 1956 and was mainly involved in parish work in Warwickshire and prison chaplaincy on the Isle of Wight.  The Church Army taught me the value of a person to person ministry, which was to stand me in good stead in years to come in whole-time hospital chaplaincy.

In 1962 Olwyn and I were married at St.Nicholas' Church Sutton and in 1964 I became a student at Ripon Hall, Oxford.  I was ordained in Coventry Cathedral in 1966 to a curacy at Holy Trinity, Leamington Spa.

In 1978, after two incumbencies, in Warwickshire and Sheffield, I became Chaplain of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospitals, Shropshire, moving back to Sheffield in 1989 to become Chaplain of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and the Sheffield Children's Hospital.  I spent my final years with the NHS as a part-time chaplain at the Northern General Hospital and Weston Park Hospital, a well-known Sheffield hospital for the treatment of cancer patients.

Five years after retirement in Sheffield, we came to Southport.  On our first visit to St Cuthbert's on Sunday 3rd June 2007, we were given a warm welcome and now have many friends here.

My main interests are Bible Study and Church History.  I am an avid reader and lover of classical music.  For physical exercise I enjoy swimming, walking and gardening, especially the growing of vegetables.

I am happy and priviledged to be invited, where needed, to preach and conduct services within the North Meols Team Ministry.
